The Medal of Honor

Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith

Today, President George W. Bush presented the Medal of Honor to David Smith, the 11-year-old son of Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith, who was killed April 4, 2003, exactly two years ago, in the fight to take Baghdad's airport.

Smith manned an APC-mounted .50-caliber machine gun to cover his men's evacuation of wounded and withdrawal. Exposed from the waist up, Smith poured fire into enemy positions until he was killed.
