UN on Climategate: Don't Worry, Be Happy

Rajendra Pachauri, head of the UN's IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) commenting on the greatest scientific scandal evah:
"The processes in the IPCC are so robust, so inclusive, that even if an author or two has a particular bias it is completely unlikely that bias will find its way into the IPCC report..."

...So I think it is a very transparent, a very comprehensive process which insures that even if someone wants to leave out a piece of peer reviewed literature there is virtually no possibility of that happening."
So just send us the billions of dollars we agreed upon and shut the hell up.

Of course anyone with more than three neurons to rub together knows that the scandal is much more than hijinks from a couple of obscure scientists.

I assure you these are just
insignificant teeny tiny little itsy bitsy fibs.

Climategate Deniers, Bonehead Stupid or Simply Tragically Uninformed?

Josh Marshall, returns from vacation on Bizarro World and spouts off at Talking Points Memo about his political enemies' supposed hostility to science:
There's been a lot of recent evidence not only that Republicans disproportionately disbelieve the evidence for man-made global warming but that their skepticism is growing. I think that trend is fairly classed under the general heading of Republican/conservative hostility to science. But the other point interests me no less.
Maybe it's just me, but I'd say the people who are hostile to science are the ones who destroy data to thwart FOIA requests, plot mind control games, and corrupt the peer review process.

Josh, dude, it's called "Climategate.". Where you been?

A Convenient Ruse: Man-Made Global Warming Data Destroyed

The "scientists" at the East Anglia Climatic Research Unit have admitted that the raw data used to divert trillions of dollars to combat Anthropogenic Global Warming has been dumped, supposedly to save space on their servers:
SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.
That means there's no chance that their results can be replicated by reputable scientists.

Emails From Obama's Science Czar Included in Climategate Leak

Did you wonder why the President is still going to Dopenhagen to negotiate the destruction of America's economy, even though the science of AGW has been compromised with the release of the CRU documents?

Some of his advisors are acolytes.

John Holdren, President Obama's Science Czar, who Forbes described as "...a fierce ideological environmentalist..." brags to the CRU conspirators about an email exchange (included at the link) he had with a Man-Made Global Warming skeptic:
From: "John P. Holdren"
Subject: For the EPS Wednesday breakfast group: Correspondence on Harvard Crimson
coverage of Soon / Baliunas views on climate
Cc: jeremy_bloxham@xxxxxxxxx.xxx, william_clark@xxxxxxxxx.xxx,
patricia_mclaughlin@xxxxxxxxx.xxx,
Bcc:
Colleagues--
I append here an e-mail correspondence I have engaged in over the past few days trying to educate a Soon/Baliunas supporter who originally wrote to me asking how I could think that Soon and Baliunas are wrong and Mann et al. are right (a view attributed to me, correctly, in the Harvard Crimson). This individual apparently runs a web site on which he had been touting the Soon/Baliunas position. While it is sometimes a mistake to get into these exchanges (because one's interlocutor turns out to be ineducable and/or just looking for a quote to reproduce out of context in an attempt to embarrass you), there was something about this guy's formulations that made me think, at each round, that it might be worth responding. In the end, a couple of colleagues with whom I have shared this exchange already have suggested that its content would be of interest to others, and so I am sending it to our "environmental
science and policy breakfast" list for your entertainment and, possibly, future breakfast discussion.
The items in the correspondence are arranged below in chronological order, so that it can be read straight through, top to bottom.
Best,
John
It's nice to know that the country is now in the hands of such arrogant, egotistical, thorough-going elitists.

Climategate's Little Red Book

Included in the documents leaked with the East Anglia Climatic Research Unit emails is an interesting little piece that could have been entitled, "Mind Control for Dummies," but goes under the less sinister sobriquet, "The Rules of the Game - Evidence base for the Climate Change Communications Strategy" (full text posted here).

It bears this message on the cover:
The game is communicating climate change;
the rules will help us win it."
The pamphlet was forwarded to Tim Osborn of CRU by Saffron O’Neill, formerly of CRU, but now with the University of Melbourne:
Hi Tim

I've found some 'communicating cc' ref's which I've attached - nothing too hard going! Futerra's 'rules of the game' is a good intro to what climate change communicators should be working towards in terms of best practice. Sophie's poster is a summary of the main findings of her PhD research from a couple of years back in ENV, and is a message that some NGOs in particular would still do well to heed! Finally, the communicating CC document is an
outline of Defra's recent initiative, as followed on from Futerra's
consultancy work.
"Defra" is the innocuously named British Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. The pamphlet was produced by Futerra, a private firm dedicated to selling various Green agenda; "For over eight years we've helped you save the world."

A few techniques they're using to save the world:

Sex sells:
6. Use both peripheral and central processing
Attracting direct attention to an issue can change attitudes, but
peripheral messages can be just as effective: a tabloid snapshot
of Gwyneth Paltrow at a bus stop can help change attitudes to
public transport.
Be trendy:
8. Use transmitters and social learning
People learn through social interaction, and some people are
better teachers and trendsetters than others. Targeting these
people will ensure that messages seem more trustworthy and are
transmitted more effectively.
Commoners are stupid and selfish oafs:
3. There is no ‘rational man’
The evidence discredits the ‘rational man’ theory – we rarely weigh
objectively the value of different decisions and then take the clear
self-interested choice.

Hypothetical American 'MSM' Coverage of Climategate

Here is an example of the type of video report that Americans might see if the major broadcast media, ABC, CBS, and NBC, were at this time able to match the professional and ethical standards of Russia Today:

We can only hope that, over time, American "journalists" will see the value of providing full coverage of events, regardless of their personal agenda. Until then, it appears that Russia Today is setting the standard for how a free press should behave.

More Man-Made Global Warming Monkeyshines?

Ruh-roh. The raw data from New Zealand's equivalent of the UK's Climate Research Unit seems to contradict the official Warmist position. Looks like the same sort of troubling pattern of data manipulation suspected at CRU.

Update: The CRU connection:
An agency of the New Zealand government has been cooking the books to create a warming trend where none exists, according to a joint research project by global warming skeptics at the Climate Conversation Group and the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition. The chief cook? Dr. Jim Salinger, considered one of the country's top scientists, who began the graph in the 1980s when he was at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in the UK. CRU, of course, has become ground zero of Climategate at Dr. Salinger has maintained close relations with CRU since, as seen in the Climategate emails.

Ahh, the sweet funkadelic strains of chicanery circling the bowl:

Brits Blame Obama For Flagging Public Support on Afghanistan

The Telegraph reports that Defence Minister Robert Ainsworth is publicly blaming Obama for dropping the ball:
A “period of hiatus” in Washington - and a lack of clear direction - had made it harder for ministers to persuade the British public to go on backing the Afghan mission in the face of a rising death toll, he said.

Senior British Government sources have become increasingly frustrated with Mr Obama’s “dithering” on Afghanistan, the Daily Telegraph disclosed earlier this month, with several former British defence chiefs echoing the concerns.

But Mr Ainsworth is the first Government minister to express in public what amounts to personal criticism of the US president’s leadership over the conflict which has so far cost 235 British lives.

Polls show most voters now want an early withdrawal, following the death of 98 British service personnel this year alone.
Let's hope things change.

Everything You've Always Suspected About the Global Warming 'Consensus' May Be True

Over the weekend it was reported that "hackers" had stolen electronic data from the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in Britain, one of the most prominent Climate Change proponent institutions in the world. The data were posted on the intertubes by "FOIA," a nom de plume that leads me to suspect a whistleblower rather than a hacker, as the scientists whose files were taken discuss the troubles of dealing with British Freedom of Information Act requests.

The hacked (or leaked?) emails and documents from the East Anglia Climate Research Unit paint a picture that seems less about modern scientists engaged in research than it does about medieval inquisitors engaged in protecting the True Faith.

The emails reveal a three-pronged approach to achieving the political ambitions of the Global Warming Movement.

Massage and package the data. Excerpted from 942777075.txt:
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.
Suppress dissenting views by controlling the peer review process. Excerpted from 1089318616.txt (emphasis added):
...The other paper by MM is just garbage - as you knew. De Freitas again. Pielke is also losing all credibility as well by replying to the mad Finn as well - frequently as I see it. I can't see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin and I will keep them out somehow - even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!
Cheers Phil
Excerpted from 1106322460.txt:
...I'm not sure that GRL [Geophysical Research Letters] can be seen as an honest broker in these debates anymore, and it is probably best to do an end run around GRL now where possible. They have published far too many deeply flawed contrarian papers in the past year or so. There is no possible excuse for them publishing all 3 Douglass papers and the Soon et al paper. These were all pure crap. There appears to be a more fundamental problem w/ GRL now,unfortunately...Mike
Fight "skeptics" by denying Freedom of Information Act inquiries. Excerpted from 1228330629/txt:
When the FOI requests began here, the FOI person said we had to abide by the requests. It took a couple of half hour sessions - one at a screen, to convince them otherwise showing them what CA was all about. Once they became aware of the types of people we were dealing with, everyone at UEA (in the registry and in the Environmental Sciences school - the head of school and a few others) became very supportive. I've got to know the FOI person quite well and the Chief Librarian - who deals with appeals.
Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) has called for a congressional probe into the shenanigans at CRU. Expect it to go nowhere because Inhofe has an "R" after his name and looking into this business would endanger the Democrats' much-coveted Cap and Trade bill.

An Elegant Chaos has created a searchable archive of the emails.

Health Care Whoreishness

Harry Reid has determined that the price for Louisiana senator Mary Landrieu's professional services is:
On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster.”

The section spends two pages defining which “states” would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that “during the preceding 7 fiscal years” have been declared a “major disaster area.”

I am told the section applies to exactly one state: Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill.

In other words, the bill spends two pages describing would could be written with a single world: Louisiana. (This may also help explain why the bill is long.)

Senator Harry Reid, who drafted the bill, cannot pass it without the support of Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu.

How much does it cost? According to the Congressional Budget Office: $100 million.

Study: Fox News Is Most Fair and Balanced

Despite being rated as toughest on Obama, Fox was also found to be the most fair and balanced, as Forbes' S. Robert Lichter explains:
So how could Fox have both the most balanced and the most anti-Obama coverage? Simple. It's because the other networks were all so pro-Obama. CMPA analyzed every soundbite by reporters and nonpartisan sources (excluding representative of the political parties) that evaluated the candidates and their policies. On the three broadcast networks combined, evaluations of Obama were 68% positive and 32% negative, compared to the only 36% positive and 64% negative evaluations of his GOP opponent John McCain.
But Fox was equally tough on McCain, while ABC, CBS, and NBC's correspondents had their lips firmly locked on Obama's butt and other appendages.

NY's Dem Governor Rips Obama a New One

Throwing people under the bus can have consequences.

For instance, embattled New York governor David Paterson now feels free to air his true reaction to the Obama administration's idiotic decision to try 9/11 conspirators in New York City:
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Gov. David Paterson openly criticized the White House on Monday, saying he thought it was a terrible idea to move alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspected terrorists to New York for trial.

"This is not a decision that I would have made. I think terrorism isn't just attack, it's anxiety and I think you feel the anxiety and frustration of New Yorkers who took the bullet for the rest of the country," he said.
Paterson, who replaced disgraced Democratic governor Eliot Spitzer, has refused Obama's demand that he stand down from running for governor even though he has virtually no chance of winning.

The guy can't be all bad; the SEIU thugs are bankrolling advertising against him.

Climategate's 'Rules of the Game'

Note: this post has been pre-dated to conserve front page blog space. It was posted on November 28, 2009.

Why were the principles
created?
The game is communicating
climate change; the rules will
help us win it.
These principles were created as
part of the UK Climate Change
Communications Strategy, an
evidence-based strategy aiming
to change public attitudes
towards climate change in the
UK. This is a ‘short version’
of a far longer document of
evidence that can be found at
www.defra.gov.uk.
There is plenty of evidence
relating to attitudes towards and
behaviour on climate change,
general environmental behaviour
change and the whole issue
of sustainable development
communication. As we reviewed
the research for these principles,
one ‘überprinciple’ emerged:
“Changing attitudes
towards climate change is
not like selling a particular
brand of soap – it’s like
convincing someone to
use soap in the first place.”

At first glance, some of the
principles may seem counterintuitive
to those who have
been working on sustainable
development or climate change
communications for many years.
Some confront dearly cherished
beliefs about what works; a few
even seem to attack the values
or principles of sustainable
development itself.
However, these principles are a
first step to using sophisticated
behaviour change modelling and
comprehensive evidence from
around the world to change
attitudes towards climate change.
We need to think radically, and
the Rules of the Game are a sign
that future campaigns will not be
‘business as usual’. This is a truly
exciting moment.

For the full evidence for these rules, and the climate change
communications strategy itself, please visit: www.defra.gov.uk
For the new UK sustainable development strategy please visit:
www.sustainable-development.gov.uk

blowing away myths
Many of the oft-repeated communications methods and messages
of sustainable development have been dismissed by mainstream
communicators, behaviour change experts and psychologists.
Before we go into what works, our principles make a ‘clean sweep’
of what doesn’t:
1. Challenging habits of climate change communication
Don’t rely on concern about children’s future or human
survival instincts
Recent surveys show that people without children may care more
about climate change than those with children. “Fight or flight” human
survival instincts have a time limit measured in minutes – they are of
little use for a change in climate measured in years.
Don’t create fear without agency
Fear can create apathy if individuals have no ‘agency’ to act upon
the threat. Use fear with great caution.
Don’t attack or criticise home or family
It is unproductive to attack that which people hold dear.
2. Forget the climate change detractors
Those who deny climate change science are irritating, but
unimportant. The argument is not about if we should deal with climate
change, but how we should deal with climate change.
3. There is no ‘rational man’
The evidence discredits the ‘rational man’ theory – we rarely weigh
objectively the value of different decisions and then take the clear
self-interested choice.
4. Information can’t work alone
Providing information is not wrong; relying on information alone to
change attitudes is wrong. Remember also that messages about
saving money are important, but not that important.

a new way of
thinking

Once we’ve eliminated the myths, there is room for some new
ideas. These principles relate to some of the key ideas emerging
from behaviour change modelling for sustainable development:
5. Climate change must be ‘front of mind’ before
persuasion works
Currently, telling the public to take notice of climate change is
as successful as selling tampons to men. People don’t realise
(or remember) that climate change relates to them.
6. Use both peripheral and central processing
Attracting direct attention to an issue can change attitudes, but
peripheral messages can be just as effective: a tabloid snapshot
of Gwyneth Paltrow at a bus stop can help change attitudes to
public transport.
7. Link climate change mitigation to positive
desires/aspirations
Traditional marketing associates products with the aspirations of
their target audience. Linking climate change mitigation to home
improvement, self-improvement, green spaces or national pride are
all worth investigating.
8. Use transmitters and social learning
People learn through social interaction, and some people are
better teachers and trendsetters than others. Targeting these
people will ensure that messages seem more trustworthy and are
transmitted more effectively.
9. Beware the impacts of cognitive dissonance
Confronting someone with the difference between their attitude and
their actions on climate change will make them more likely to change
their attitude than their actions.

linking policy and
communications

These principles clearly deserve a separate section. All the evidence
is clear – sometimes aggressively so – that ‘communications in the
absence of policy’ will precipitate the failure of any climate change
communications campaign right from the start:
10. Everyone must use a clear and consistent
explanation of climate change
The public knows that climate change is important, but is less clear
on exactly what it is and how it works.
11. Government policy and communications on climate
change must be consistent
Don’t ‘build in’ inconsistency and failure from the start.

audience
principles

In contrast to the myths, this section suggests some principles that
do work. These principles are likely to lead directly to a set of general
messages, although each poses a significant implementation challenge:
12. Create ‘agency’ for combating climate change
Agency is created when people know what to do, decide for
themselves to do it, have access to the infrastructure in which to act,
and understand that their contribution is important.
13. Make climate change a ‘home’ not ‘away’ issue
Climate change is a global issue, but we will feel its impact at home –
and we can act on it at home.
14. Raise the status of climate change mitigation
behaviours
Research shows that energy efficiency behaviours can make you
seem poor and unattractive. We must work to overcome these
emotional assumptions.
15. Target specific groups
A classic marketing rule, and one not always followed by climate
change communications from government and other sources.

style
principles

These principles lend some guidance on the evidence of stylistic
themes that have a high chance of success:
16. Create a trusted, credible, recognised voice on
climate change
We need trusted organisations and individuals that the media can
call upon to explain the implications of climate change to the
UK public.
17. Use emotions and visuals
Another classic marketing rule: changing behaviour by
disseminating information doesn’t always work, but emotions
and visuals usually do.

effective
management

These principles are drawn primarily from the experience of others,
both in their successes and in the problems they faced:
18. The context affects everything
The prioritisation of these principles must be subject to ongoing
assessments of the UK climate change situation.
19. The communications must be sustained over time
All the most successful public awareness campaigns have been
sustained consistently over many years.
20. Partnered delivery of messages will be more
successful
Experience shows that partnered delivery is often a key component
for projects that are large, complex and have many stakeholders.

Obama's AG To Treat 9/11 Terrorists as Common Criminals

That means, of course, conferring full American Constitutional rights upon these unevolved barbarians.

From the New York Times:
WASHINGTON — Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the self-described mastermind of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and four other men accused in the plot will be prosecuted in federal court in New York City, the United States attorney general announced Friday.
Brilliant. Why not paint a giant target across Manhattan while you're at it, fool.

Attorney General Eric Holder is "confident" that the the terrorists will get what's coming to them. Any lawyer who is truly "confident" of what a judge and jury will do is incompetent. Can't wait for the defense lawyers to start the discovery process. Motion to change venue and suppress the confessions in 3...2...1...

You know it's going to be a completely PC show trial. How many "moderate" Muslims will be on the jury? It only takes one to hang a jury.

Update: Via Ed Morrissey at Hot Air, Virginia Democratic Senator Jim Webb disagrees:
"...They do not belong in our country, they do not belong in our courts, and they do not belong in our prisons..."

Cigar Afficianado Bill Refers to Opponents Using Vulgar Sexual Innuendo

Taking some time out from skirt-chasing (and hosing), disgraced former President Bill Clinton offered this pungent comment about the health care debate [emphasis added]:
Whitehouse quoted Clinton arguing: "The reason the tea-baggers are so inflamed is because we are winning."
"Teabagging" refers to the act of squatting over a person's mouth and dipping the male genitalia into it repeatedly.

But, why is Slick Willie, who normally follows the polls like a dog sniffing buttholes suddenly so hot for health care? All the better to send Barry down in flames in 2012, clearing the way for Hillary.

Another Communist Flushed From Obama Administration

Good little leftist water-carriers that they are, the Washington Post manages to explain Anita Dunn's departure as Obama's communications director without once mentioning Chairman Mao.

This is about as close as the Posties come to conceding that controversy marked Dunn's tenure:
A source inside the White House, who was not authorized to speak about strategy meetings, said at the time that Dunn went out front against Fox first and foremost because it was her job, but also because it potentially gave the administration the opportunity to distance itself from the flap with the Roger Ailes-led news channel once she leaves the communications job.
No mention, of course, of this video:

House Dems Declare War on American People, US Constitution

The House of Representatives just passed the Socialized Medicine bill, with 218 Dems and 1 Republican, Ahn "Joe" Cao of Louisiana, voting "aye."

Bill Owens, Dem elected to New York State's 23rd district, voted for the bill, despite campaign promises to the contrary. It will be interesting to see if Owens even bothers to run in the 23rd next year.

Liars and Haters and Cons, Oh My

Like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, this headline from the Syracuse Post-Standard promises but fails to deliver: Dede Scozzafava says 'hate, lies' wore her down

Somehow the story doesn't back up the headline. "Lies and hate" are lamented, but nothing specific is alleged.

And it softpeddles the problems NY23 Republican voters had with Dede:
Scozzafava had been elected as a pro-choice Republican to be mayor of Gouverneur and member of the New York state Assembly. Suddenly, she was not conservative enough for the rest of the country
Well, if pro-choice were the only issue, but Scozzafava is also anti-traditional marriage, anti-secret union ballot (card check), pro-porkulus...and ultimately pro Democratic challenger Bill Owens - that choice validated virtually every criticism of Scozzafava as a RINO.

Cry me a river, Dede, just do it on the other side of the aisle, where you belong.

Does Charles Johnson Hate America?

Thanks to William Teach at Stop the ACLU we learn that Chuck has named Doug Hoffman of the NY23 as the "Glenn Beck candidate", apparently for the unforgiveable sin (in Johnson's faith tradition) of endorsing Beck's Nine Principles, 12 Values:
1. America Is Good.

2. I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life.
God “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.” from George Washington’s first Inaugural address.

3. I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday.
Honesty “I hope that I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider to be the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” George Washington

4. The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government.
Marriage/Family “It is in the love of one’s family only that heartfelt happiness is known. By a law of our nature, we cannot be happy without the endearing connections of a family.” Thomas Jefferson

5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.
Justice “I deem one of the essential principles of our government… equal and exact justice to all men of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political.” Thomas Jefferson

6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results.
Life, Liberty, & The Pursuit of Happiness “Everyone has a natural right to choose that vocation in life which he thinks most likely to give him comfortable subsistence.” Thomas Jefferson

7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.
Charity “It is not everyone who asketh that deserveth charity; all however, are worth of the inquiry or the deserving may suffer.” George Washington

8. It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion.
On your right to disagree “In a free and republican government, you cannot restrain the voice of the multitude; every man will speak as he thinks, or more properly without thinking.” George Washington

9. The government works for me. I do not answer to them, they answer to me.
Who works for whom? “I consider the people who constitute a society or a nation as the source of all authority in that nation.” Thomas Jefferson

The 12 Values
* Honesty
* Reverence
* Hope
* Thrift
* Humility
* Charity
* Sincerity
* Moderation
* Hard Work
* Courage
* Personal Responsibility
* Gratitude

Scozzafava Shows True Colors

Dede Scozzafava, the erstwhile Republican nominee to represent New York's 23rd district, has endorsed the Democrat candidate after withdrawing from the race.

No word yet on what sort of payoff Scozzafava will get for her whoring herself out to the American Marxist Left:
A Democratic source said that Scozzafava and her husband, Ronald P. McDougall, met with U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, and state Democratic Committee Chairwoman June F. O’Neill at a restaurant in Gouverneur on Saturday afternoon to discuss the endorsement.
